Melanotan I

Melanotan I (afamelanotide) is a synthetic analog of alpha-MSH that stimulates melanin production in the skin. It produces a gradual, more natural-looking tan compared to its sibling Melanotan II.

It was originally developed for preventing skin damage in people with photosensitivity conditions and has an approved medical use under the brand name Scenesse. For tanning purposes, it's used off-label at doses of 250 to 500 mcg daily via subcutaneous injection.

The tan develops slowly over weeks and requires at least some UV exposure to activate. It's the more targeted option compared to Melanotan II, as it primarily acts on the MC1 receptor without the broader melanocortin effects.

Don't expect a tan after the first injection. MT1 works gradually. Most people start seeing a visible color change around weeks 2 to 3, with full results developing over 6 to 10 weeks of consistent dosing plus UV exposure.

The tan looks more natural than MT2 because it follows your skin's existing melanin distribution. You still need some sun or UV bed exposure — it doesn't work without it. Once you hit your desired color, you can switch to a maintenance dose of 1 to 2 injections per week.

Nausea is the most common side effect, especially in the first few days. Taking it before bed or on an empty stomach can help. Facial flushing and mild headaches are also reported.

Existing moles and freckles may darken. This is normal but worth monitoring. Any mole that changes shape or becomes irregular should be checked by a dermatologist. MT1 is considered safer than MT2 in this regard since it's more selective.

Refrigerate after reconstitution at 36 to 46°F. Powder form is relatively stable and can be stored at room temperature. Once reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, use within 28 days.

The peptide is light-sensitive. Keep it in the fridge door or wrapped in foil.
